Ecuador. The exotic Amazon jungle. Shamans. Mythical Ayahuasca ceremonies.
The only thing forty-two year old actor/comedian Joe Montaperto knows about any of this is what he read in National Geographic magazines when he was a teenager.
Now, however, after 20 years in the uber neurotic New York City arts scene, he is frustrated, depressed and on the verge of a major crack-up. The said meltdown comes to full fruition shortly afterward when a penniless Joe moves back to his childhood home in New Jersey and observes his parent’s laughing uproariously at nightly reruns of Friends.
He’s gotta make drastic changes. Somewhere the exact opposite of New York. So, even though he has never traveled anywhere outside the country, he makes the monumental decision to take a flight to Ecuador, where he fully expects to be eaten by cannibals, for some reason.
Once there, he experiences months of drunken, frantic ups and downs, plus disastrous attempts at courtships. Convinced he is cursed, he decides he really has to return home - an abysmal failure.
Fate shines his way at this very moment though, when he meets Miseal, an indigenous adventure tour operator, and they soon become fast friends. Miseal introduces him into the jungle native community, which embraces him - and for the first time in his life - Joe feels connected. The doors to his perception of reality are blown wide open however, when Miseal takes him to meet Aunqi, an Amazonian shaman, who guides him through two life-altering Ayahuasca ceremonies - liberating Joe to embark on a quest for adventure deep in the Peruvian Amazon.
